Detailed Itinerary
Days 1 and 2: Manyara Ranch Conservancy
Within the Kwakuchinja wildlife corridor connecting Tarangire and Lake Manyara National Parks and only an hour from Arusha sits the 35,000 acre Manyara Ranch Conservancy. The ranch operates as a wilderness conservation facility run by the African Wildlife Foundation in partnership with the local Maasai community and encompasses a variety of habitats, including open savanna, acacia woodland, bush, and riverine forest. These habitats support a large diversity of resident birdlife and wildlife, among which are groups of large bull elephants, breeding herds of giraffe, many lesser kudu, wildebeest, zebra, gazelle, oryx and eland, as well as the full range of cats and other predators. Accommodations are in six private luxury walk-in tents, sited with panoramic views of the camp waterhole and surrounding landscape. Whilst at the camp guests may enjoy escorted walking safaris; day and night game drives; bush meals; sundowners; game viewing from hides; fly camping; tours of the ranch operations; and visits to a Maasai boma and local primary school.

Day 3: Lake Manyara National Park / Ngorongoro Highlands
Depart the Conservancy after breakfast for the Ngorongoro Highlands.  En route enjoy a morning visit to beautiful Lake Manyara National Park, famous for its tree-climbing lions and soda lake full of hippo and tinted pink with huge flocks of flamingos. In the park’s varied environments you can easily observe at close range giraffe, elephant, zebra, buffalo, baboons, and more. Ascend the Rift Valley wall to the cool Highlands and Gibb’s Farm for luncheon. Gibb’s Farm, a working African farm since 1929 and safari destination since mid-century, is located outside the small town of Karatu, on the southern edge of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Within the larger farm the cottages are set amongst beautiful English gardens designed to rejuvenate the weary traveler. Gibb’s Farm is known for its outstanding cuisine, prepared fresh from the farm’s organic produce and local market harvest. Activities include guided cultural walks on the farm, to the nearby village of Tloma and its primary school, or the town of Karatu; birding and nature walks; and cycling the local footpaths. While at Gibb’s you will have your choice of one of their signature African spa treatments.

Day 4: Ngorongoro Crater
In the morning enter the Ngorongoro Conservation Area for a day game drive in its famed Crater. The descent into the crater, 2,500 feet below the rim, is an unforgettable experience. Its 100 square miles is home to almost 30,000 animals, creating a density and diversity of wildlife unseen anywhere else in Africa. Ngorongoro is the best location for viewing the rare black rhino and to observe huge old bull elephants who come here to “retire.” Picnic lunch in the Crater or hot lunch back at the lodge.
Casual afternoon at the Farm to enjoy the activities on offer or just relax at your leisure before sundowners, dinner, and animated conversation about the day’s adventures.

Day 5: Olduvai Gorge / Serengeti National Park
After breakfast continue westward to the Serengeti plain. Stop along the way to visit the Olduvai Gorge museum at the site of Louis and Mary Leakey’s archeological discoveries of early human ancestors. You may descend into the gorge for an inspection of the dig sites or take a side trip to a nearby Maasai boma for a peek into the lives of these proud and fascinating pastoral people.
Serengeti National Park is arguably the most famous wildlife area in the world. It’s pure numbers are staggering: about 4 million animals reside within its ecosystem, including a million and a half wildebeest, a quarter million zebra, a half million gazelle, and tens of thousands of the their predators (lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, jackal, crocodile, etc.). The Serengeti is the site of one of the most magnificent events of the natural world – the migration of more than a million wildebeest in a cyclical process that occurs in different stages and areas throughout the year. In addition, the vast park offers breathtaking scenery unto itself. Scattered throughout the southeastern short grass plains are kopjes, geologic wonders comprised of exposed gneiss and granite shaped by the wind and temperature fluctuations. Different environments emerge as you head deeper into the Serengeti. Here you will find riverine forests, acacia woodlands, hills, and open grassland that create a vast geographic mosaic.
Tanganyika Wilderness Camps’ “Under Canvas” series allows you to experience the wild African bush firsthand, yet in complete comfort and privacy. The spacious tents in small remote camps are fully furnished with either a king or twin beds and private en suite facilities. The delicious meals are served in a separate tent, though as weather permits dining may be done al fresco. Camps are sited in key locations across the Serengeti to capture premier game viewing opportunities at different times of year according to the annual movements of the wildlife.
