SENE utilizes the skills and expertise of Tanzanians to support and develop the local economy. Simon’s personal mission is to teach both SENE employees and SENE guests about the mutual benefits from adventure travel in Tanzania. Yet, the benefits are more than economic, as the SENE model promotes community engagement and cross-cultural interaction. Here are some of our initiatives and impacts:
- SENE is Tanzanian-owned. It has always had its main office in Moshi, at the foot of Kilimanjaro, hires exclusively local employees in the Kilimanjaro office, and has its Mbahe Village guest cottages in Kilimanjaro.
- As a member of the community, Simon ensures all employees are given fair wages. SENE abides by the fair porter treatment practices of the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project.
- At the Mbahe Village Farm Cottages, SENE employs only local villagers. Hosting visitors seeking a pristine mountain experience strengthens villagers’ relationship to preserving the mountain and surrounding land as a valuable resource.
- All guests staying in the Mbahe cottages are given village tours that include information on the history and culture of the local Chagga people, introduction to the flora and fauna of the region, and a description of the farming practices of the Chagga on Kilimanjaro.
- At the conclusion of every Kilimanjaro climb SENE has a celebration that includes the climbers and all the guides and porters - recognizing that every climb is a team effort. All members of the expedition are honored at this time and a combination of western and local food and drink are served.
